An important part of resilience is being comfortable taking healthy, appropriate risks (things like taking a challenging class, making a new friend, or trying a new activity). When children take a healthy risk, they learn to stretch themselves and to use their skills and strengths to reach a goal or overcome a challenge. You can help children think about taking appropriate risks through this fun activity.

-

Start by tracing the child’s body on a large piece of construction paper (or on paper bags cut open and taped together). Ask the child to lie on the paper with their arms outstretched as if they were reaching high, so the outline shows the child stretching. Next, work with the child to draw pictures, write words, or glue pictures from magazines inside the outline of themselves that capture a healthy risk they want to take and healthy risks they have already taken. For example, if the child would like to stretch themself by trying out for a part in the school play, you could draw a picture of the character or paste a photo from online.

-

Fill in as many different ways the child wants to stretch themself as possible and then, whenever they accomplish one (for example, trying out for the play – even if they didn’t get the part) put a star next to it. For older kids, you can keep a list or create a scrapbook, rather than drawing the outline of their body. This is a great way to visualise and motivate personal growth.

UNTETHERED

A child who has never been expected to succeed can be likened to an elephant tethered to a tent-peg. In traditional cultures, infant elephants were kept from running away by having their back foot chained to a large stake in the ground. The strength of the stake in the ground was so great that no matter how hard the elephant pulled, it could not release its foot from its snare. The keepers found that, eventually, the elephant stopped trying to get away.

-

As a result, when the elephant grew into an adult, all that was needed to keep it in place was a thin piece of rope tied to a flimsy tent-peg. Realistically, a grown elephat should have no trouble snapping the rope or pulling up the peg. However, it was no longer the strength of the stake that held the elephant down, it was the strength of the expectation, formed through painful experience, that no amount of strain would release them from the trappings of their past.

-

The expectations we place, implicitly and explicitly, on the children we work with are critically important.Rosenthal and Jacobsen’s (1968) Pygmalion in the Classroom study introduced the concept that teacher’s beliefs in the capacity of children affect their teaching practice and interactions. Teacher’s beliefs in each child’s ability created performance gaps between otherwise identical groups of children.

-

Teachers generally base their expectations of any given student on the child’s past success in school. Other factors include socio-economic status, student appearance, type of school, student behaviour, and funnily enough, where students sit in the classroom. This belief in turn, defines how teachers interact with the children in question and leads to different academic outcomes. Teachers with low expectations of particular students will engage in behaviours such as insincere praise, less feedback, less eye contact and provide fewer opportunities for the child to answer questions. In psychology, this effect is called a self-fulfilling prophecy, a prediction that directly or indirectly causes itself to become true, due to positive feedback between belief and behaviour.

-

Having low expectations of children early in their academic career can lead down a spiralling path of low achievement, which leads to lower teacher expectations, once more, leading the child to an ingrained belief that they lack the capacity to achieve and succeed. They are incapacitated by what was once an ungrounded belief. This process needs to be curtailed, as a sense of control and mastery is a critical protective factor for child resilience. Children need to feel like they can make positive changes in their own life. For this to happen,we must challenge the stakes and chains we create in our own minds, and allow children to freely explore the realm of possibility untethered.

Your Certificate is valid for three years

At the end of the three years you must undergo training again. This is for a few reasons:

The research on resilience is always advancing

The field of neuroscience is expected to have a marked increase in our understanding of what is going on physically in the brain. New understandings will help us focus on what works effectively and efficiently to change the brain for the better, and to ‘heal’ traumatised brains. This research will help improve the theories and refine the activities that build resilience in children and adults.

The impact of this new knowledge will flow into educational processes and systems. Hopefully social and emotional learning, linked with brain science, will move more strongly into schools and educational models.

We update our activity books periodically and with every edition we aim to stay at the cutting edge of what really works in building resilience and well-being.

Our Research Project

Our program is free at the moment due to the generosity of donors like the Tim Fairfax Family Foundation and Talbot Family Foundation. To keep their support and draw others to us, we need to keep gathering evidence that the program works, so we would ask your school to support us in this. If your school has concerns about the research interfering with student’s or teacher’s well-being please talk to us about this, otherwise our research team will be in touch with you.

Being part of our research project is not mandatory but will assist us enormously.

Providing evidence that the FRIENDS program works is the only way organisations will provide us with the funds to provide free training and resources.

Online Training – Blackboard Setup

On this page you can do two things:

Set up your computer so it will work with Blackboard Collaborate

Click on the link that will take you to your training session

Setting up for Blackboard Collaborate

We use Blackboard Collaborate to deliver our online training sessions. In order to make your training session a success there are a few things you need to do in the days before we train to make sure your computer settings allow you access to training session. Most of this only needs to be done once to set up your pc forever – so please make time to do this before the day of our training!

Step 1: Check System Requirements

The following Blackboard web page will automatically provide a system check and let you know if:

your operating system is suitable – Green tick if OK

you have a supported version of Java – Green tick if OK

If either of these are not ok you will need to talk to your IT team.

To check system requirements CLICK HERE

Scrolling down this page will take you to the following:

Step 2: Configure Your System

This is an important step!

By clicking on the configuration room link, you will be taken into a Blackboard room where you can test your connection, settings, and configure your audio. This will also allow you to see if your (school) system will allow you to access Blackboard rooms. Please don’t underestimate the importance of checking this! We have had schools have to cancel trainings due to the schools settings not allowing access to Blackboard. If you can’t access this configuration room talk to your IT team and let us know.

Step 3: Training Resources

Here you can:

View an Introduction to Blackboard – 6min 55sec

View a Quick Guide for Participants (PDF)

Doing at least one of the above is recommended for first time users

Step 4: View Blackboards Support Portal

Go here if you need further support. Make sure you let us know if you are having any issues with accessing Blackboard.

The Pathways to Resilience Trust relies on your generosity to provide children and communities in need with access to world-class evidence-based resilience programs that will enable a child to overcome stress and hardships, and learn strategies and skills that will equip them to be a happy and productive member of society.

Access to these programs will boost a child’s resistance to developing anxiety or depression, and provide them with a repertoire of coping strategies for when the going gets tough.

$15 purchases a book for a child to participate in the program

$250 can allow an individual child the chance to take part in a specialised 12-week program

$360 trains a teacher from a school or Early Childhood Centre to facilitate the program

$500 will allow a school-based prevention program to be run in one school

How to inform funeral guests to donate to the Pathways to Resilience Trust in lieu of flowers?

Firstly, may we offer our sincere condolences if you are selecting this type of support. A gift in lieu of flowers at the funeral of a loved one or dear friend is a most rewarding way to honour their memory. By encouraging those who attend the service to donate, the life of child will be positively affected as they are afforded the opportunity to participate in an emotional resilience program in memory of your loved one.

If you would like friends and mourners to make a donation to the pathways to Resilience Trust in lieu of flowers we suggest you include this request in your loved one’s death notice. You may consider the following wording:

‘Donations in lieu of flowers to The Pathways to Resilience Trust P.O Box 5699 West End Qld 4101.”

For further information please contact The Executive Officer Anne Warwick directly on (07) 38445844. The nominated next of kin will receive a list of names of all In Memoriam donors.

How to make an In Memory Gift?

When someone close to you dies, a gift to the Pathways to Resilience Trust is a meaningful tribute to your loved one. It is also a way to express your commitment to the emotional wellbeing of the children and young people of Australia.

When you make an In Memory donation to Pathways to Resilience Trust, a card will be forwarded to you to send to the bereaved family to acknowledge your gift. This card will enable you to record your words of condolence, and also let them know that you have made a gift to The Pathways to Resilience Trust to help reduce anxiety, depression and suicide in the community.

All gifts donated will be gratefully acknowledged in the name of your loved one on our “In Memoriam Page”.

If you wish to make a one-off In Memory gift, please complete the “In Memory” Form * and post or fax to the Trust. Alternatively phone and speak with Anne Warwick – Executive Officer on (07) 38445844.

Making a bequest to Pathways to Resilience trust is an enduring way to help reduce the prevalence and impact of anxiety and depression in children and young people in the Australian community by giving them access to emotional resilience programs. Your bequest will most importantly enable us to reach more children, otherwise unable to access assistance, and teach them skills to empower them and improve their journey through life.

Prior to making or modifying your Will we recommend you obtain independent legal advice. This will help to ensure that the wording used accurately and validly records your wishes. However, if you wish to support Pathways to Resilience trust through a bequest, we have provided some information and suggested wording below.

How to make a bequest to Pathways to Resilience trust

There are two ways of making a bequest under your Will:

(a) by leaving a specific amount of money to Pathways to Resilience trust ; or

(b) by leaving a share of your estate (in other words, a share of what is left of your estate after your family and other beneficiaries have been taken care of) to Pathways to Resilience trust.

Suggested wording

A clause in your Will to leave a bequest to The Pathways to Resilience Trust can be written as follows -

“I give to Pathways to Resilience Trust ACN 093 865 840 for its general purposes the sum of $[insert the relevant amount], free from all duties, deductions and charges. The receipt of an authorised officer for the time being of Pathways to Resilience Trust shall constitute a full and sufficient discharge of my executor’s duties.”

OR

“I direct that [insert percentage]% of my residuary estate be given to Pathways to Resilience Trust ABN 758 9582 3879 for its general purposes. The receipt of an authorised officer for the time being of Pathways to Resilience Trust shall constitute a full and sufficient discharge of my executor’s duties.”

If you already have a Will, then all you need to do is add a codicil – a short legal amendment to your existing Will.

Please contact us if you would like to discuss this further.
